The affected banks were Wema Bank Plc and Zenith Bank Plc.
The incident, which happened at about 2.20 pm, created panic among the university community while the operation lasted.
The bandits, arrived at the university in a green Nissan Quest car, shooting into the air to scare people away.
The seven-man gang were said to have succeeded in gaining entrance to Wema Bank, carting away huge sums of money from the vaults.
Eyewitnesses said the robbers vandalized the nearby Zenith Bank after a failed attempt to break into it.
The three other banks in the area were spared by the bandits who allegedly operated for 20 minutes.
It was learnt that the riot policemen attached to the banks fled the scene as they could not withstand the superior firepower of the robbers.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nicholas Nkemdeme, who visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, told reporters that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the robberies.
Nkemdeme described the robbery as an embarrassment, promising that his command would arrest everyone involved in the crime.
He said, “Well, for the meantime, we have arrested some suspects because we are strongly convinced that these are student actions.”
Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University, Prof. Kayode Makinde, confirmed the robbery, expressing gratitude that no casualty was recorded.
Makinde added that three people who suffered shock as a result of the robberies had been admitted into the varsity’s hospital for medical attention.
He assured parents and guardians of the safety of their children and wards, adding the management would review the security arrangement and other operational logistics in the school.
The VC, however, commended the police commissioner for his prompt response to the distress calls.
